A homesteader prays
to a temporary god
but that's ok
in a temporary way

but for the girl with the dog

wrapped in a blanket
and the bandaged head
sitting on the sidewalk

outside Top Dog
in the rain
at 1:45 a.m.
there is no homestead

though "today
I found out
I'm pregnant" and
"I'm just waiting

for the guy who
did this to me
to go to court
in the morning

and then
if they let him walk,
we're going back up
to Mendocino."
