Red Cedars (Thuja plicata), Vancouver Island: photo by Teryn Robinson, 3 May 2011

Washed...put on clean shirts...went out amongst bushes
with prayerbook...pray to God to send a ship
Under the starcrowded night
skies tremolo bird
calls echoing in cedars
the quiet eyes of the lake
where Jewitt went to bathe
and pray for his release
are shining shining cool
and wet with distance
and silent lamentation
